"Sense of Place"
a project by Maquoketa High School Intermediate and Advanced Art Students
Students were given the assignment of illustrating their personal Sense of Place in some way. We began with the following question and used the definition following that to begin discussing.
What does it mean to have a sense of place?
Geographic place. Cultural geographers, anthropologists, sociologists and urban planners study why certain places hold special meaning to particular people or animals. Places said to have a strong "sense of place" have a strong identity that is deeply felt by inhabitants and visitors.
We decided for our purpose that it could be an actual physical place, a place within a culture or family, or even a feeling of belonging to something in some way. This left the project pretty open-ended as it could be anything they connect to, whether tangible or intangible. They could also use any medium they wished, so some chose to paint, others draw, and some made books.
